North Country Lass Quack and Oink pie, £4.50

[Quack and oink pie]Another one found at Newcastle farmers' market with a silly name, but we forgave it, because it (a) tasted really nice and (b) was huge, and at that point we were still all hungry.

The ingredients in this pie read like a pretty high-falutin' menu - duck, pork, red wine, brandy, plum and cream. Could very easily be something tall on a huge plate, with a drizzled jus of rouladed confit of melange. However North Country Lass took the wise decision to wrap it up in a nice thick pastry instead.

Proper, real, textured meat, said our tasters, with none of that fake cubed stuff. It all stuck together well (and stuck quite well to the roof of your mouth too...). A bit too sweet for some, it looked fantastic when sliced. But as everyone knows, a sliced pie will quickly oxidise if left uneaten. That's our excuse and we're sticking to it.

Score: 7
